The Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre were a familiar sight to New Yorkers for decades and for many they were a reassuring sight – something on the lines of the Statue Of Liberty, they had become an icon of American spirit. But after September 11, things changed for the United States as well as for the people living there. The Twin Towers were destroyed when Al Qaeda terrorists hijacked two passenger jets and crashed them into the towers and brought them down in never-before-seen scenes of mass tragedy that caused thousands of deaths – nearly people.
Another hijacked plane crashed into the Pentagon in Virginia and the fourth one crashed into an open field in Pennsylvania. Here are some of the haunting photos of the post tragedy photos from September 11 attack that sum up the tragedy. Associate Professor of Structural Engineering and Applied Mechanics, University of Texas Arlington. The collapse of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City and the World Trade Center towers in spawned many vows to never let anything like those events happen again. The building was nine stories tall, made of reinforced concrete. The explosion in a cargo truck in front of the building on April 19, , weakened key parts of the building but did not level the whole structure.
Only a few columns failed because of the explosion, but as they collapsed, the undamaged columns were left trying to hold up the building on their own. Not all of them were able to handle the additional load; about half of the building collapsed. Though a large portion of the building remained standing, people died in the areas directly affected by the bomb, and in those nearby areas that could no longer support themselves. A month after the attack, the rest of the building was intentionally demolished; the site is now a memorial to the victims.
A similar phenomenon was behind the collapse of the World Trade Center towers on September 11, , killing nearly 3, people. When exposed to the high temperatures created by burning airplane fuel, steel columns in both towers lost strength , putting too much load on other structural supports.

And yet for one simple fact—the time of day—it would have been far more deadly. Had the attacks occurred later that morning, when the number of occupants in each tower would have swelled to nearly 20,, fatalities would have been significantly higher. As many as 14, people could have been killed—many not by the plane attacks themselves, but by trying to exit the buildings.
They would have died because of intense overcrowding in the tower stairwells where, safety experts estimated, it would have taken four hours to get out, much longer than the buildings stood prior to their collapse. Most people use stairs every day, never giving them a second thought. When it comes to life safety in the event of a fire, they become one of our most critical lifelines to survival. That was especially true in the World Trade Center that day, since the elevators quickly became a non-option.
As a longtime fire-protection engineer and professor of fire science—and as someone who served on the federal advisory board of the technical investigation of the collapse of the World Trade Center towers—I am deeply familiar with the crucial role stairwells served that day in matters of life and death.
Below, some of the most important factors in play on September 11, One of two stairwell floor signs from World Trade Center known to survive, from the nd floor, recovered from Ground Zero. The stairs in the twin towers were, to a great extent, a product of their times. In , as construction on the towers was beginning, New York City issued a brand-new building code, allowing for substantial reductions in egress capacity from the previous code dating to In the case of the north tower, the stairs were approximately 70 feet apart; in the south tower, they were about feet apart.

Designed by American architect Minoru Yamasaki , the original World Trade Center consisted of two story buildings known as the „twin towers“ and five smaller buildings. Yamasaki studied over a hundred models before adopting the design. Plans for a single tower were rejected because the size was thought to be cumbersome and impractical, while a footprint with several towers „looked too much like a housing project,“ according to the architect.
This history details how the World Trade Center was designed and built and also examines why the structure ultimately could not withstand the terrorist attacks that destroyed them on September 11, The acre World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan was billed by its proponents as an homage to capitalism, squarely placing New York at the „center of world trade. In the end, the tall skyscrapers of New York’s Financial District replaced the numerous small businesses that made up „Radio Row“ electronics shops, and Greenwich Street was abruptly truncated, disconnecting city neighborhoods largely populated by immigrants from the Middle East, including Syria.
Whether or not that had any influence on future acts of terrorism is open to debate. Minoru Yamasaki Associates, from Rochester Hills, Michigan served as principal architects. The foundation engineers came from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Engineering Department. The World Trade Center twin towers were light, economical structures designed to keep the wind bracing on the outside surfaces.
Architect Yamasaki presented the plan in January , and excavation began by August The steel construction started two years later, in August The North Tower WTC 1 was completed in and the south tower WTC 2 in , with a dedication ceremony on April 4, , at which Yamasaki declared, „The World Trade Center is a living symbol of man’s dedication to world peace. Edouard Pierre Goubert, a French-American with roots in Pondicherry now Puducherry , works as an interest rates broker with brokerage firm TP ICAP. It had offices on the 25th and 26th floors the North Tower, and the 55th floor the South Tower of the World Trade Center. Goubert worked in the North Tower when it was hit by two hijacked planes on Tuesday, 11 September Two planes crashed into the storey towers — symbols of American economic power — while a third plane hit the Pentagon and a fourth crashed into a field in Pennsylvania.
The attacks were part of a larger coordinated one by Islamist terrorist group Al Qaeda. Brokerage firm TP ICAP, which year-old Goubert has been working for since with a specialisation in interest rate swaps, lost one employee in the attacks — a woman attending a conference on a top floor — out of odd brokers, traders, and support staff. He got a call on his Motorola flip phone from his wife who worked near the towers. This was at about 8.
The company security started ushering traders out, much to their dismay. It was the sound of bodies being smashed to the ground. Much later, with the help of a French-Canadian couple who were getting reception, Goubert managed to call his brother in Montreal, who then informed his parents in Pondicherry that he was alive.
His wife remained unreachable. Goubert was one of nearly 5,00, who were transported from lower Manhattan to New Jersey in a mass maritime evacuation across the Hudson River, spontaneously executed by ferries, fishing boats, tour boats and mariners.
