Dealing with injuries has been an unfortunate part of the MLB season that every Fantasy player has had to deal with, and the last week hasn’t made things any easier. Mike Trout went on the IL last week with a calf strain that could cost him a couple of months, and he was joined by, among others, Jeff McNeil and Michael Conforto , Zach Plesac , Nick Senzel , Franmil Reyes , Lance McCullers , Kenta Maeda , and, just Wednesday, Corey Kluber shoulder , Luke Voit oblique and Marcell Ozuna finger.

It’s just been that kind of year, and the injuries aren’t showing any signs of slowing down. Which means, you might need to start thinking about trading from a position of strength to fill some holes in your lineup. Or, you might need to start considering trading your star players on the IL at a discount, just to get someone in the lineup. And, if you’re in a good spot in the early going, now might be the perfect time to start trying to take advantage of others‘ desperation by acquiring some of their injured stars.

If you’re sitting at in a points league or with a solid lead in a Roto league, taking the short-term loss might be worth it if you could get someone like Trout or Corey Seager to provide a big boost once they come back. While I try to provide suggested trade values for every player in this column every week, when it comes to injured players, so much comes down to that team context.

I’ve got Trout valued as a point player in points leagues, right around the same value as someone like Nick Castellanos rest of season. But, if you’ve got Trout on your roster and you are , you’d probably much rather have Castellanos. Sure, it might make your team less likely to win a title if you get to the playoffs and Trout is healthy, but you may not get to the playoffs if you don’t fill that hole.

With only a few weeks remaining to secure playoff spots, fantasy managers cannot be as conservative as real NFL general managers were this trade deadline. As usual, I try to read the tea leaves and suggest players to trade for or away within the space below. Hopefully one or more of these moves will help give your team the necessary boost to make a postseason appearance.

Reminder, the Yahoo Fantasy default trade deadline for leagues is November I received some Twitter heat earlier this year when I had recommended trading away Chubb. However, Chubb was getting it done on the ground in this revamped Browns rushing attack, and with Chubb set to return to action in Week 10, now is actually a good time to try and trade for the Browns stud running back.

The Browns have faced some tough matchups since Chubb went down, but the difference in rushing output for the team is stark. In the four games Chubb played, the Browns rushed for a whopping yards Since Chubb landed on injured reserve, the team has amassed just rushing yards The Browns were operating better with Chubb as the workhorse and Hunt as the change-of-pace back who excelled catching passes. The Browns get some favorable matchups leading to the fantasy playoffs Texans, Jaguars , so acquiring Chubb now, as he heads into his bye and has already missed four weeks, might be wise.

If he returns to the field and dominates, his fantasy price tag is only going to go up.

You want the best portfolio of players without having to pay too much for them. Sometimes to achieve the optimal team, you need to make trades. The best way to gain added value is to trade away an over-performing player for one in a rut. This way, you reap the benefits of a stud player hitting their stride as you get to watch the other person look for answers.

The tricky part is assessing which players are trending in which way. We don’t have a ton of data to reference on the season, as many of the underlying metrics still need more time to stabilize before making exact assumptions. However, we can look at a player’s track record and performance in this early season. This will be a weekly piece that drops every Thursday for your assistance.
